This charity was set up in 1988 from the estate of the late John
Fernald to assist new assistant theatre directors with limited experience
to gain additional experience in a professional theatre.
Who qualifies for assistance?
Any trainee assistant theatre director who has had some experience,
say two years, who wishes to expand their knowledge by serving for
a period of time with a professional theatre.
How do I apply?
The professional theatre which is taking on the assistant director
needs to submit a written request to the John Fernald Award outlining
the reason why they are taking on that individual and what training
they intend providing. The theatre should also provide information
to indicate that there will be sufficient money available to complete
the training.
The individual should also provide their own written sheet outlining
what they hope to gain from the experience and also they must include
their CV to date to show what experience they have had so far.
When do I apply and how much will the award be?
As the John Fernald only has a very limited budget there is only
one meeting a year to assess the applications and this normally
takes place in March. All the applications will be considered on
their merits and the total award of £5,000 will be distributed
amongst those theatre companies that are successful. This may mean
one company receives the entire award or it may result in them only
receiving say £1,000.
It is recommended that you contact the Secretary, Keith
Carter, before any application is made to discuss matters further. |
